“People gotta go to the movies… The movies have become very unrisky as possible. And the truth is, to get people go to the movies, you have to take some risks.” Indeed – I completely agree with him on this point. One of the latest filmmakers to visit the famous “Video Club” video store in Paris is director James Gunn, while promoting the release of Superman. They recently had Francis Ford Coppola and Luca Guadagnino (along with Nicolas Winding Refn and Gareth Edwards), but now it’s Gunn’s turn to geek out about movies in the Paris video shop. Gunn peruses the store and picks out some of his favorite movies including: Kung Fu Hustle, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Villainess (which has directly inspired many action sequences in his movies), Herzog’s Rescue Dawn, Ti West’s Pearl, Jaws (of course everyone loves it), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Pixar’s The Incredibles, and great filmmakers including Preston Sturges & Sergio Leone. This video is also good because it’s sort of an interview discussing Superman & Hollywood & screenwriting.
Thanks to Twitter for the tip on this. The video is made by Konbini, a mega popular YouTube channel from France. It’s part of their “Video Club” series (this one with a very stoned Brad Pitt is fun). Their intro (direct translation of French) says: “James Gunn, director of Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Suicide Squad, and head of DC Studios, talks to Video Club about his favorite films.” This latest Konbini Vidéo Club visit is promoting Gunn’s Superman movie – now playing in theaters worldwide (view the IMAX promo). The video store they visit in this video is JM Video in Paris (check Google Maps) – visit their official site. You can also see Video Club promos with Léa Seydoux, Christopher Nolan & Cillian Murphy, Wes Anderson, M. Night Shyamalan, Terry Gilliam, Francis Ford Coppola, & Luca Guadagnino (earlier this year). For more details, visit YouTube. We’re always watching out for more of these. What do you think about Gunn’s picks?
