Bleecker Street has launched a trailer for the 41st Anniversary “Golden” celebration / re-release of the iconic rock classic This is Spinal Tap. For the uninitiated, This is Spinal Tap is Rob Reiner & Christopher Guest’s badass mockumentary – it’s an entirely fake film presented as a real documentary about a fake band. This Is Spinal Tap chronicles England’s loudest and most punctual band on their disaster-filled U.S. tour. Experience the remastered, remixed, and definitive version of what can only be described as a mockumentary masterpiece. The original This is Spinal Tap debuted in 1984 as Reiner’s very first feature. It’s the film where “turn it up to 11” comes from. It also recently screened at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival before they started filming the sequel – Spinal Tap II, due out later this year (in September). “The cult comedy classic of the 80s, brimming with energy and grease-stained humor, where the music is amped up to 11 and the lights are explosive!” With Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner, June Chadwick, Tony Hendra, Bruno Kirby. This Is Spinal Tap shines a light on the self-contained universe of a metal band struggling to get back on the charts, including everything from its complicated history of ups and downs, gold albums, name changes and undersold concert dates, along with the full host of requisite groupies, promoters, hangers-on and historians, sessions, release events and those special behind-the-scenes moments that keep it all real. This is Spinal Tap is a classic rock mockumentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, his very first feature film before going on to make The Sure Thing (1985) and Stand By Me (1986) right after this. It’s written by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner. Produced by Karen Murphy. This originally opened in theaters in March 1984 and it also played at the USA Film Festival. It was added to the National Film Registry in 2002. Bleecker Street is releasing the sequel Spinal Tap II later this year.
