“One of the best ways of learning is to discuss something with someone who disagrees with you.” Ha. It depends on what I disagree with them about! Abramorama has released this acclaimed documentary film in theaters – it’s already playing now (screenings list here). The Last Class with Robert Reich is a doc film directed by filmmaker / producer Elliot Kirschner. Based on all the buzz so far, it’s essential and optimistic film that is worth watching at any time. After a lifetime of political impact, he’s stepping into the classroom one final time. Robert Reich has run the U.S. Labor Department, racked up over a billion video views, and shaped public debate. But his true calling is teaching. In The Last Class, Reich teaches his final “Wealth and Poverty” class to 1,000 students at UC Berkeley, ending a 40-year career that reached 40K students. A vital reminder of how important education is and why truly great teachers make a huge difference. The film also wonders: “Who will be the teachers of tomorrow?” Yep this really looks like a massively inspiring and empowering film about what it means to go out and engage with humanity and maybe just change the world.
Here’s the official trailer for Elliot Kirschner’s doc The Last Class with Robert Reich, from YouTube:
Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. The Last Class captures a master educator wrestling with the dual realities of his own aging and his students inheriting a world out of balance. Reich confronts the impending finality with unflinching candor, humor, introspection, and a rawness of emotion he has never shared publicly before. 1000 students fill the biggest lecture hall on campus—the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that society has to stay the way it is. His final assignment: Who will be the teachers of tomorrow? The Last Class with Robert Reich is a documentary film directed by doc producer / filmmaker Elliot Kirschner, directing his first feature film after producing for Dan Rather and the docs The Most Unknown & Human Nature previously. Produced by Josh Melrod and Heather Kinlaw Lofthouse. The film already opened in select US theaters starting on June 27th, 2025 this summer. It’s already playing – check your local listings.
