“I can, I can, I can, and I will!” “Okay, good.” Kino Lorber has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Shari & Lamb Chop, two names which many of you will instantly recognize together. It’s a doc about the iconic TV host, entertaining, and famous ventriloquist Shari Lewis and her career. Set to open in theaters starting in July. The full intro via DOC NYC (where it first premiered in 2023): “Shari Lewis was a dancer, singer, and magician but is best known as the ventriloquist behind sock puppets Charlie Horse, Hush Puppy and, of course, Lamb Chop. This lively doc charts the life, loves, and career hits and misses of this spunky perfectionist, who forever changed the face of children’s television. Featuring ventriloquists who she inspired and nostalgia-inducing clips, this upbeat portrait of brilliant Bronx native turned beloved TV personality brims, like Lewis, with warmth and charm.” This is a fantastic doc trailer that really sells this film, I’m convinced to watch it now. This look like a heartfelt and inspiring story in so many unique ways. Even if you’re not familiar with her or Lamb Chop already, still looks like it’s worth a watch. Opens in July.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Lisa D’Apolito’s doc Shari & Lamb Chop, direct from YouTube:
“Shari Lewis’s life is the ultimate comeback story. Shari mesmerized and empowered generations of children and their families in believing in themselves and having fun doing it. Audiences for the film have been multi generational and have laughed and cried together and fallen in love with Shari and Lamb Chop I hope it is a film that you can go with your grandparent, parents and your children and whether you watched Shari on tv or not, it brings the magic of childhood.” –Director Lisa D’Apolito
Before Fred Rogers & Jim Henson, there was Shari Lewis, a kids TV pioneer whose whimsical characters and ebullient spirit have guided generations of children. Raised in the Bronx by a proud feminist mother & a professor father who moonlighted as Peter Pan the Magic Man, Shari became a multi-talented dancer, singer, and magician. But when an injury sidelined her dance aspirations, she channeled her creativity into a passion for ventriloquism, creating the now beloved sock puppet characters Charlie Horse, Hush Puppy and, of course, Lamb Chop. From her early years of TV success to the blow of the cancellation to her 90s comeback, Lisa D’Apolito’s heartfelt documentary charts the life, loves, and career hits and misses of a spunky perfectionist whose talent and perseverance stand as a testament to women’s power and forever changed the landscape of children’s entertainment. Featuring interviews with ventriloquists inspired by Lewis alongside nostalgia-rich clips and home movies, this vibrant portrait brims with the same warmth, wit, and magic that defined her – celebrating the power of imagination and the inner child within us all.
Shari & Lamb Chop is directed by acclaimed Italian-American doc producer / filmmaker Lisa D’Apolito, director of the doc film Love, Gilda about Gilda Radner previously, and a producer on other doc projects. Produced by Nicholas Ferrall, Cassidy Hartmann, Morris Ruskin, Douglas Warner. This initially premiered at the 2023 DOC NYC Film Festival a few years ago, and also played at the 2024 Santa Barbara & Raindance Film Festivals. Kino Lorber will release D’Apolito’s Shari & Lamb Chop doc in select US theaters starting on July 18th, 2025 this summer. For more release details, visit their official site.
