“Smile. Say the words on the page. It’s not that hard.” Vertigo Releasing has debuted another official trailer for the indie drama titled In Camera, made by the very talented British filmmaker Nabhaan Rizwan as his feature directorial debut. This first premiered in 2023 at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, and it also stopped by the Zurich, London, and Stockholm Film Festivals that year. In Camera follows Aden – played by Nabhaan Rizwan – a young Actor who’s caught in a vicious cycle of nightmarish auditions. After he receives multiple rejections, Aden takes it upon himself to find a new part to play. In Camera is commentary on the acting industry, British society, and latent racism that is still prevalent in many places. “In its exploration of the given themes, the film doesn’t deny itself a socio-critical tone, nor does it resist the temptation to tease the viewer a little.” Nabhaan Rizwan stars as Aden, along with Rory Fleck Byrne, Amir El-Masry, and Josie Walker. I reviewed this film back in 2023, writing: “I am quite intrigued by this film and I’m glad it exists, and above all I’m moved by Nabhaan Rizwan’s engrossing performance.” It’s definitely worth a look.
Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Naqqash Khalid’s film In Camera, direct from YouTube:
Aden (Nabhaan Rizwan) is a young man who spends most of his time recording self-tapes for acting parts he never gets. After a string of dreadful auditions, where bizarre and humiliating requests are made of him, he comes up with a radical move: he will take full responsibility for finding a role that primarily he, himself, wants to play. This self-assured debut, playful in form and narrative with a fairy-tale edge to it, examines both the commercial work ethic and the concept of identity, which it presents as multilayered and also questionable. In Camera is written & directed by the up-and-coming British filmmaker Naqqash Khalid, making his feature directorial debut after a few other shorts previously. Produced by Mary Burke and Juliette Larthe. This initially premiered at the 2023 Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia, and played at the London Film Festival. It already opened in theaters last year. Vertigo Releasing will debut Khalid’s In Camera film direct-to-VOD in the UK & US starting April 29th, 2025 coming up. Who’s curious to watch?
