Glen Powell to Star in Firefighter Movie From Director Ron Howard at Amazon MGM

Glen Powell is continuing down his smoking hot career path.

Amazon MGM Studios has landed the actor to star in an untitled firefighter movie for director Ron Howard. The studio preemptively acquired the original pitch from Christina Hodson, who is writing the script. The story focuses on two disparate childhood friends who are now accomplished firefighters and face a deadly series of Texas blazes while navigating their relationship.

Producers include Howard, Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody for Imagine Entertainment, alongside Powell and Dan Cohen for Barnstorm. Hodson serves as executive producer.

Last year, Powell starred in Universal’s big-screen hit Twisters and Richard Linklater’s Netflix film Hit Man, with Powell also producing and co-writing the latter. His forthcoming projects include Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man for Paramount that hits theaters this fall and the A24 thriller Huntington, which recently wrapped production. Additionally, Powell is in production on J.J. Abrams’ next film for Warner Bros., and he leads the series Chad Powers that hits Hulu soon.

The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier this year that Universal landed a pitch for the sci-fi feature The Natural Order that has Barry Jenkins in talks to direct Powell in the lead. Powell is also working with Judd Apatow on a Universal comedy about a country music star.

Howard previously directed Universal’s 1991 fire-focused feature Backdraft, starring Kurt Russell, William Baldwin and Scott Glenn.

Hodson has worked on the films Bumblebee, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and The Flash.

Powell is represented by CAA and Johnson Shapiro. Hodson is repped by CAA, Northstar and attorney Jim Gilio.

TheInSneider was first to report on the project.
