“Everybody’s in love with her…” Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the main trailer for Richard Linklater’s new film Blue Moon, one of two brand new Linklater movies from this year. Blue Moon first premiered at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival (aka Berlinale) earlier in the year, while his French take on Jean-Luc Godard titled Nouvelle Vague premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival a few months ago. Blue Moon is out first – in theaters starting in October this fall. On the evening of March 31st, 1943, legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart confronts his shattered self-confidence in the famous Sardi’s bar as his former collaborator Richard Rodgers celebrates the opening night of his ground-breaking hit musical “Oklahoma!” on Broadway. This very talky film takes place entirely in this bar over the course of one drunken evening. The film stars Ethan Hawke as Lorenz, Andrew Scott as Richard Rodgers, Margaret Qualley as Elizabeth Weiland, Bobby Cannavale as bartender Eddie, and Giles Surridge as Troy. This earned plenty of great reviews from Berlinale, but it won’t be everyone’s cup ‘o tea. A somewhat depressing story of a man realizing he is at the end of his prime.

Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon tells the story of the legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart bravely facing the future as his professional and private life unravel during the opening night party for his former partner Richard Rodgers’ hit stage show, “Oklahoma!”. In 100 minutes, the film unspools in real-time the events in Sardi’s bar on the evening of March 31st, 1943. It is a meditation on friendship, art & love, featuring a rich tapestry of writers, actors, musicians, friends and protégés – a parade of the famous and the soon-to-be-famous. By the time this night is over, Hart will have confronted both a world irrevocably changed by the war, and the seeming impossibility of love. Blue Moon is directed by the acclaimed American filmmaker Richard Linklater, director of many great films including Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise & Sunset & Midnight, SubUrbia, The Newton Boys, Waking Life, Tape, School of Rock, Bad News Bears, Fast Food Nation, A Scanner Darkly, Me and Orson Welles, Bernie, Boyhood, Everybody Wants Some!!, Last Flag Flying, Where’d You Go Bernadette, Apollo 10½, and Hit Man previously, along with Nouvelle Vague also this year (which premiered at Cannes). The screenplay is written by Robert Kaplow. Produced by Mike Blizzard, John Sloss, and Linklater. This first premiered at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Sony Classics will debut Linklater’s Blue Moon film in select US theaters on October 17th, 2025 this fall.
