My Oxford Year’s Corey Mylchreest Didn’t Hold Back While Explaining Why The Netflix Movie’s Ending Is ‘More Powerful’ Than The Book

Major spoilers for both the book and the movie My Oxford Year are ahead! Read with caution. If you’d like to watch the film, you can do so with a Netflix subscription.

I was very sad when I finished the book-to-screen adaptation of My Oxford Year, but in a good way. In the final scenes of the film released on Netflix’s 2025 schedule, we saw Anna and Jamie’s escapades around Europe, only for it to be revealed that that never happened, and Sofia Carson’s Anna ended up going on that journey alone after her love died. Compared to the book it’s based on, the end of this movie is much sadder, too, because it makes a definitive change that Corey Mylchreest, who plays Jamie, said makes the story “more powerful.”

Sofia Carson-led Netflix romance, we see a montage of Jamie and Anna traveling around Europe together, doing many romantic things. However, it’s later revealed that Anna actually did all that alone after Jamie died. It’s truly tragic; however, it’s also powerful. That’s why Corey Mylchreest loved it too, as he told EW:

It’s better like that. It’s more powerful. That is the direction that the book is heading in, and it would feel like hypocrisy for Jamie to speak all these things and for Anna to be understanding that philosophy of life [and not end there].

He makes a valid point here. Throughout the movie, Jamie makes a huge effort to live his life to the fullest with everything he has left. After seeing his brother die of the same cancer he has after trying treatment for a long, painful time, he knows that’s not what he wants.

So, he’s determined to make do in a big way with the time he has left. Both he and Anna seem to agree on that, and the ending shows how true that is in the way that Carson’s character lives her life afterward.

To that point, Mylchreest – who knows a thing or two about playing out tragic love stories, as he played King George in the Queen Charlotte cast – explained that if Jamie didn’t die at the end, it could have felt like his character’s actions and motivations were undervalued. He said:

The impressive thing is that Jamie believes all of these things — forever is composed of nows — and he doesn’t have that many nows left. So, what’s really amazing is that he’s doing all of this stuff and believes all these things with really not that much time left. If that wasn’t true, it would feel like we’re undervaluing his beliefs.

I totally get what he’s saying. While I’m always here for a happier ending, this one definitely had a bigger emotional punch. It also hammered home the philosophy Jamie followed. Now, the book does too, as Ella and Jamie use what time they have left to the fullest. However, the film makes us reckon with the little time we have, as we see how both these characters act on the knowledge that they don’t have infinite time together.

Overall, I like both endings, and I do agree that the movie is “more powerful.” We have to see how Anna goes on with her life after her time with Jamie. We’re also forced to fully realize the reality of one of the story’s primary morals, which is that nothing lasts forever, and no matter what happens, life, to quote the book, “keeps flowing as we come and go.”

Who Could Replace Colin Jost And Michael Che On Weekend Update? One SNL Star Just Pitched Themselves (And I Think They’d Be Great)

If you can believe it, Michael Che and Colin Jost have been at Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update desk for over a decade now, well surpassing the likes of Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s time on the segment. I don’t see the pair of SNL anchors moving on anytime soon either, as there are currently no signs that they won’t keep hosting the news segment on the 2025 TV schedule this fall. But one fellow cast member of the show just pitched a solid replacement I kind of want to see now.

The Current SNL Star Who Pitched Himself For SNL’s Weekend Update

Bowen Yang has had a consistently hilarious run as a cast member on SNL since his on-air debut in 2019. And, he also has one of the most popular podcasts hosted by Hollywood stars with his friend Matt Rogers called Las Culturistas. When Yang and Rogers were on Hot Ones Versus to promote their Bravo award show, The Las Culturistas Culture Awards, airing this Tuesday on Bravo and streaming the next day on Peacock, he ended up making a great pitch about SNL.

how long Bowen Yang will remain on SNL, given what his career has become in the last few years. He’s in Wicked for goodness sake! If anything, this whole conversation definitely makes me want to see Matt Rogers join upcoming SNL hosts (or as a special guest) so they can do their take on Weekend Update.

I Need Some OG Hunger Games Stars To Return For Sunrise On The Reaping, And Josh Hutcherson Shared How He Feels About It

SPOILERS ahead for the book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

There’s been a lot of casting announcements for the next Hunger Games movie, but I have a lingering question about one of the most-anticipated upcoming book adaptations: Will the original actors make a cameo like they do in the book? After rumors spread this week that it could happen, Josh Hutcherson has commented on the topic.

Josh Hutcherson Shares His Thoughts On Being In Sunrise On The Reaping

hoping to see Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson briefly in the upcoming movie. Here’s what Hutcherson said on the topic:

Brit + Co about a casting rumor that went around earlier this week (via Twitter user @DivinitySeeker1, which is by no means confirmed or official), Hutcherson shared that he knows “nothing” about what’s next for The Hunger Games movies. He’s expressed wanting to play Peeta before, as long as author Suzanne Collins signed off on it, but for the time being, either he’s not looped in or is sworn to secrecy. As he continued:

Hunger Games is amazing, and I’ve loved it for many years and I will love it forever.

Sunrise on the Reaping definitely gives Hutcherson the window to reprise his role should the filmmakers decide it. The movie just started filming, so we’ll have to wait and see, but this would definitely be the kind of role that Lionsgate would want to keep under wraps as a way to give fans a surprise in theaters come its 2026 release date.

Why I Need Hutcherson And Two Other OG Stars To Be In The Next Hunger Games Movie

While a lot of cameos can seem a little pointless or cash-grab-y these days, there’s actually a really sweet reason why Katniss and Peeta show up in Sunrise in the Reaping, and I need it to happen in the movie.

After learning about all the horrors and devastation Haymitch witnessed during his Hunger Games, there’s something comforting about seeing how his life turned out, where he has a family in Peeta and Katniss, who both assisted in the end of the twisted Hunger Games tradition at the end of Mockingjay Part 2.

The original Hunger Games are currently back on streaming, and you can look forward to Sunrise on the Reaping’s release on November 11, 2026. Oh, and if you find yourself in London, there’s going to be a Hunger Games stage show premiering this fall.

After Seeing Tron: Ares Footage At San Diego Comic-Con, I’m No Longer Worried About One Big Part Of The Movie

After Seeing Tron: Ares Footage At San Diego Comic-Con, I’m No Longer Worried About One Big Part Of The Movie

Tron: Ares is on its way to theaters later this year, and finally, we’ll get to see the movie Jared Leto has been fighting to make happen for a decade. His passion, along with the stellar cast attached, has led me to trust that the Disney franchise is headed in the right direction with its return to theaters. Of course, it couldn’t all be perfect, and the fact that Daft Punk is no longer together made me sad that they wouldn’t be along for the ride.

Fans rejoiced when it was announced that Nine Inch Nails would be doing the soundtrack for Tron: Ares, and while I’m a fan of their music, I had my doubts. I know, it sounds wild to anyone remotely familiar with their music, but let me talk about my skepticism and how the footage at San Diego Comic-Con took away all my fears about the music.

I Had Worries Nine Inch Nails Was A Miscasting For A Tron Soundtrack

he prefers making scores to making albums, and when they’re doing the latter, they go by their band name Nine Inch Nails. In my mind, they make the distinction because the musical style is different when they use their stage name, so I was a bit rattled when I saw they were using it when being credited for the music in Tron: Ares.

Disney+ subscription, but Nine Inch Nails understood the assignment here. If you’re a fan of the music group, the flashes of what makes them great are still there, but this is a soundtrack that is entirely Tron and not industrial metal.

At the same time, you’ll hear the clear Nine Inch Nails influence all throughout the music. Whether that’s the grungey scraping of metal in a chase scene where Jared Leto’s Ares is evading capture, or Trent Reznor’s voice singing softly over some mind-blowing action scene unfolding on the screen.

I could describe it, but fortunately, Disney dropped the track “As Alive As You Need Me To Be” for people to listen to. Don’t worry, there are definitely tracks we heard that have less vocals and more music, but I think I should note that the parts with lyrics didn’t feel out of place. Again, I shouldn’t be surprised that the people who made the criminally underrated Challengers score know what works in a movie.

Anthony Mackie Shares ‘Proud’ Thoughts About His Friend Malcolm-Jamal Warner Following His Death

Anthony Mackie Shares ‘Proud’ Thoughts About His Friend Malcolm-Jamal Warner Following His Death

Many were heavily affected by the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the beloved actor best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Since Warner’s passing, fans have penned sweet tributes in his memory. Fellow celebrities who were fortunate enough to know Warner have also shared their recollections of him. Anthony Mackie is now one of the latest actors to reflect on their relationship with the former child actor. While discussing Warner, Mackie expressed nothing but pride over his late “friend.”

On numerous occasions, Anthony Mackie has discussed the various stars he’s crossed paths with over the course of his career. Sometimes those sentiments manifest as jokey anecdotes or even stories about legitimate guidance. Mackie (who’s been promoting his 2025 TV schedule entry, Twisted Metal Season 2) was sentimental while discussing Malcolm-Jamal Warner. As much as Warner’s stellar work remains acclaimed by audiences, Mackie is just “proud” to have been able to know him as a person:

I’m proud to say Malcom-Jamal Warner was a friend of mine. He’s somebody that I knew and spent time with, and just was such a beautiful human being.

Personally, I can’t help but wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall during any of those conversations. What I imagine is the two actor friends discussing not just the craft but life as well. The longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe star went on to share additional thoughts about his buddy while speaking with People. Based on his comments, he didn’t take any of their personal chats for granted whenever they unfolded:

Angela Bassett and Tracee Ellis Ross paid tribute, as they not only knew Warner but were able to work with him as well. TV host Sherri Shepard also expressed sadness of Warner’s passing. Several members of The Cosby Show’s cast also reached out, with Bill Cosby, Geoffrey Owens, Raven-Symoné and Keshia Knight Pulliam being among those to honor Warner following his death.

According to reports, the Warner family was on vacation in Costa Rica when Malcolm accidentally drowned while swimming at Playa Cocles. The doctor who tried to save Warner has since spoken out, and it’s been reported that medics tried to revive him on the scene but to no avail. It’s also been said that the Resident alum’s daughter was pulled out of the water by a surfer and taken to safety.

Malcolm Jamal-Warner leaves behind far more than an excellent body of work that will surely be enjoyed for generations to come. He also leaves behind family and friends who were fortunate enough to be in his presence during his time on Earth. We’d all be wise to take a cue from Anthony Mackie and appreciate the time we have with the people we care about while they’re here.

Ryan Gosling Says One La La Land Moment ‘Haunts’ Him, And He Wishes He Could Redo It: ‘I See It All The Time’

Ryan Gosling Says One La La Land Moment ‘Haunts’ Him, And He Wishes He Could Redo It: ‘I See It All The Time’

La La Land made waves when it came out in 2016, and not just because of the La La Land and Moonlight Oscars snafu. The movie was a legitimately popular vehicle for Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, not to mention director Damien Chazelle, and we’re still taking about its memorable ending years later. It’s not the ending that keeps Ryan Gosling up at night, though. There’s another moment from filming that haunts him.

The La La Land Scene That Still ‘Haunts’ Ryan Gosling Totally Makes Sense To Me

Listen, La La Land features a series of colorful and memorable dance sequences, one of which involves Emma Stone’s character Mia and Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian dancing on an overlook in Los Angeles’ popular Griffith Park. The scene is lit by a dusky skyline and a streetlamp, and it’s expertly choreographed. It’s a great movie moment in one of the best Gosling movies. Only the actor says it ain’t so, and it ‘haunts’ him to this day.

There’s a moment that haunts me, where we’re dancing, Emma and I, and we – I didn’t know this would become the poster – but I thought we were supposed to have our hands up. And I thought it’d be cool to put my hand like that [flips his hand to a 90 degree angle]. Even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool. I was sure that that [straight hand] was cooler than that [90 degree angle hamburger hand].

four takes to complete the Griffith Park dance sequence, he didn’t have a lot of time to correct, either.

Wall Street Journal:

Now when I look at it, and I have to see it all the time, you know what would have been cooler then this [poster], that [perfect straight hand]. It just killed the energy that way.

The interviewer later confirms his “90 degree” concern is called a hamburger hand to professional dancers given it mimics a top bun, and it seems like no one had told the actor this previously. In fact, he’s given it it’s own nickname that’s cracking me up:

It was all leading to, what? Just like a lazy… I call it La La Hand.

When filming a movie, actors often do multiple takes and are kind of at the mercy of directors, editors and other members of the creative team when it comes to the final project. That’s one reason why some actors like Adam Driver don’t love watching their own stuff. It’s the mistakes they often see rather than the pockets of greatness. But in Gosling’s case, here, it’s particularly egregious because all he needs to see is the poster to be reminded of how silly he made himself look.

As far as BTS La La Land facts go, though, the whole thing is kind of charming.
