We’ve been hearing about this one on and off for a while now, with talk of performance capture and at least one cast list floating around.

Yet Variety brings word of a seemingly confirmed all-star cast for the project.

Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner and Iman Vellani are all reportedly aboard the movie.

Orwell’s 1945 novella tells the story of a group of anthropomorphic farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, the rebellion is betrayed, and under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon, the farm ends up in a far worse state than before.

The author –– who also touched on authoritarian metaphors with ‘1984,’ –– always said that ‘Animal Farm’ reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, a period when Russia lived under the Marxist–Leninist ideology of Joseph Stalin.

Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Barcelona May Days conflicts during the Spanish Civil War.
While Serkis’ ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ director Rupert Wyatt worked on an earlier draft, Nicholas Stoller, who has been responsible for movies such as ‘The Muppets,’ ‘Storks’ and ‘You’re Cordially Invited,’ wrote the actual shooting script.

Who is who in ‘Animal Farm’?

Seth Rogen in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

While not every cast member has a confirmed character, we do have a few details…

Rogen is voicing Napoleon, the pig who assumes command of the farm and ends up becoming a despot on four legs (and then two legs).

Culkin is on to be Squealer, a small, white, fat large white pig who serves as Napoleon’s second-in-command and minister of propaganda.

Serkis, meanwhile, is playing Benjamin, a donkey, one of the oldest, wisest animals on the farm, and one of the few who can read properly. He is skeptical, temperamental and cynical: his most frequent remark is, “Life will go on as it has always gone on –– that is, badly.” Many have pointed to Orwell adding something of himself to the character.

Here’s what Serkis has previously said about the project:

“The challenging journey to bring this extraordinary story to the screen has been finally rewarded by the opportunity to partner with the brilliant team at Aniventure and Cinesite. Together we hope to make our version of Orwell’s ever relevant masterpiece, emotionally powerful, humorous, and relatable for all ages. A tale not only for our times, but for generations to come.”

Rogen is currently enjoying great reviews for his Apple TV+ series ‘The Studio,’ about a stressed movie executive trying to navigate art and commerce.

Close has earned eight Oscar nominations for the likes of ‘Fatal Attraction,’ ‘Dangerous Liaisons,’ and ‘The Big Chill,’ but has also been seen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and TV series ‘Damages.’

Matarazzo is best known for his work on Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things,’ He has also lent his voice to movies including ‘My Father’s Dragon’ and ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2.’

Buscemi might be most famous for movies including ‘Fargo,’ ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘The Big Lebowski,’ and while on TV, he starred in ‘Boardwalk Empire.’ Voice-wise, his recognizable tones were heard in “Monsters, Inc.”

Cox starred in Netflix’s ‘Orange is the New Black,’ and has since appeared in ‘Promising Young Woman,’ ‘Inventing Anna’ and ‘Disclosure.’

Culkin recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘A Real Pain’ He also won an Emmy for his work as Roman Roy on HBO’s ‘Succession.’

Harrelson is a three-time Oscar nominee whose credits include HBO’s ‘True Detective,’ ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ and ‘The People vs. Larry Flynt.’

Parsons is best known for his work on ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ while Vellani broke out with her role as Kamala Khan in Marvel/Disney+ series ‘Ms. Marvel’ and follow-up movie ‘The Marvels.’

When will ‘Animal Farm’ be on screens?

While Variety’s story makes no mention of a release date (and the movie’s connection to Netflix would not naturally scream theatrical), World of Reel is reporting, and the IMDb lists, a July 11th release for ‘Animal Farm.’

Of course, given the long history of this one, we’ll believe it when it’s in cinemas or on our screens some other way.

Winton’s novel follows a man named Fred Scully, who is on an extended vacation in Europe with his wife and seven-year-old daughter when they end up in Ireland and come upon an old farmhouse that Scully’s wife Jennifer insists they purchase. As Scully begins renovating the house, Jennifer and their daughter return to their home in Australia to wind down their affairs and sell their property there.

But when Scully arrives at the airport in Ireland to pick them up, only his daughter disembarks from the aircraft. She cannot tell Scully what’s happened, there is no word from Jennifer, and no indication of where she’s gone or what has happened to her, leading a devastated Scully to travel through Europe with his daughter in a desperate attempt to find his wife.

The book has been adapted for the screen by David Kajganich, whose previous credits include the films ‘Suspiria’ (2018) and ‘Bones and All’ (2022), as well as the 2018 AMC series ‘The Terror,’ for which he developed the first season.

‘The Riders’ has actually been in development as a film since the early 2000s, with actors like Sam Worthington, Mark Strong, and Luke Hemsworth all attached to various versions of it through 2014. In 2018, the film rights landed with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions, which will produce the film alongside Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and Berger’s production banner.

Brad Pitt will next be seen in ‘F1,’ the Formula One racing drama from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski that arrives in theaters in late June. He’s also expected to begin work on Netflix’s ‘The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ the David Fincher-directed sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,’ later this year.

Director/Producer Joseph Kosinski on the set of Apple Original Films’ ‘F1,’ a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

It’s fair to say that Joseph Kosinski has become one of the hottest directors in Hollywood following the billion-dollar, Oscar-nominated triumph of his ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in 2022. Kosinski’s next movie, ‘F1,’ is due out in late June and will star Brad Pitt in a Formula One racing drama that carries a reported price tag of $200 million.

Although Kosinski has signed up for ‘Miami Vice,’ his next film will be a similarly high-profile UFO thriller which is being produced by Apple Original Films (which also produced ‘F1’). His previous pictures include ‘Tron: Legacy,’ ‘Only the Brave,’ and ‘Oblivion,’ the latter of which marked his first collaboration with ‘Top Gun’ star Tom Cruise.

What is the background of ‘Miami Vice’?

‘Miami Vice’ began life in the early 1980s as a TV show created by ‘Hill Street Blues’ writer Anthony Yerkovich, after NBC president Brandon Tartikoff requested a program that combined the style of MTV with a cop series. The result, produced by Michael Mann, starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs, two detectives working undercover in Miami. The show, which ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1990, became known for its groundbreaking visual style, its hip needle drops, and the fashions worn by its characters, arguably revolutionizing the look of TV crime drama for decades to come.

After Mann moved into directing feature films with ‘The Last of the Mohicans,’ ‘Heat,’ and others, he rebooted ‘Miami Vice’ as a 2006 movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs. While not initially a hit with either critics or audiences, the film has since been reappraised and is now considered a cult classic.

Since it’s unlikely that Farrell and Foxx will reprise their roles 20 years later, a new Crockett and Tubbs will no doubt be the first items on Kosinski’s to-do list.

‘Words of War’ Interview: Jason Isaacs and Maxine Peake

‘Words of War’ Interview: Jason Isaacs and Maxine Peake

Opening in theaters on May 2nd is the new biographical drama ‘Words of War’, which tells the true story of late Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and was directed by James Strong (‘Torchwood’).

Executive produced by two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn (‘Mystic River’ and ‘Milk’), the film stars Maxine Peake (‘The Theory of Everything’) as Anna Politkovskaya, Jason Isaacs (‘The White Lotus’) as Alexander Politkovsky, and Ciarán Hinds (‘Belfast’) as Dmitry Muratov.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Maxine Peake and Jason Isaacs about their work on ‘Words of War’, Peake’s first reaction to the screenplay and Politkovskaya’s true story, her approach to playing the character, Anna and Alexander’s relationship, Isaacs’ experience working with Peake, and what it was like for Peake to collaborate with director James Strong on set.

Moviefone: To begin with, Maxine, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and learning of Anna Politkovskaya’s true story, and how did you approach playing her in this film?

Maxine Peake: The first reaction, initially, even before the script came in, I was told the script was coming and it was about Anna Politkovskaya. That straight away felt like a no-brainer. Plus, the script is going to have to be bad for me to say no. Then I read Eric’s (Poppen) script, and I thought it was fabulous. I just loved the way it told a domestic life as well as a professional journalistic life. I thought the balance was fabulous. For me, what really struck home was what was happening at home, what was happening in her life with her husband, with her children, and that impact, because I don’t think we see that a lot. We see the intrepid journalist now but what is happening back on home soil for her? It was interesting because it’s set in Russia. We’re playing real-life people. But that for me initially was like, “How’s this going to work?” But I think it’s the right thing to do that we kept our own voices. We were playing as English. I think if we’d have done the accents, it would’ve maybe tilt it into something very different. But I think for me, that was quite an interesting dynamic of creating this character who wasn’t from where I’m from, but was in many ways who I am.

MF: Jason, can you talk about Anna and Alexander’s marriage, how he felt about her work and how that affected both of their lives?

Jason Isaacs: My version of Alexander, because he didn’t tell me these things, but there are some things that are very well-documented. Like he lost his job. He was a shining star in this political chat program, but he was also enjoying the benefits. They might’ve been violently against this newly elected president, (Vladimir) Putin, but nonetheless, he was a popular TV star, and he was not when his wife became infamous. When she really challenged the regime, that was the beginning of his career taking a real downturn. So, I played what my instincts told me must have happened. He was both loving her, respecting her, and jealous of her, and resentful of her and all those things together. It’s not that I played anything because I was opposite a magnificent actress, and I just wanted her to say or do the things I wanted her to do. Acting is never actually about the thing you are doing. It’s about what you want the other person to do. I wanted her to value me. I wanted her to stop doing it. I wanted her not to endanger the family, but maybe it was really my ego. I wanted all those things. I wanted stuff from her. I think something like this happened, but we’re not trying to recreate it as a documentary. We’re trying to tell a dramatic story. So, my version is he had a very troubled time and he had great difficulty with what happened to his wife.

Jason Isaacs in 'Words of War'. Photo: Decal.

Jason Isaacs in ‘Words of War’. Photo: Decal.

MF: Jason, what was your experience like working with Maxine to create that relationship on screen?

JI: She is a brilliant actress, and the fact is, you do a bunch of research, you do whatever you can. If people are alive, you talk to them. If not, you talk to people who knew them. You read it. Then you look at the script and you just follow your human instincts. Instincts that have been honed over decades and decades of creating human beings that seem in the round. Then James says, “Action.” He let us off the leash a lot to improvise, to try and create a healthy dynamic. You try and make something real, emotional, and truthful happen in the moment, and that’s what it is. He’s an award-winning director for a reason.

MF: Finally, Maxine, what was it like collaborating with director James Strong on set?

MP: It was great because he did let us off the leash, didn’t he? He let us improvise. We just had a freedom. He trusted us to, what Jason said before, do those scenes and they’ve got to feel in the moment, and you’ve got to feel real, and that people are connecting. We didn’t stray a million miles away from the script, but just being able to play that in the moment, and like Jason says, to affect each other, which is the most important thing. Not knowing what was coming next from each other. You have the skeleton of the scene, but just to have different bouncing off points. It’s like a dance. The film looks beautiful as well. You know what I mean? But yeah, it’s the trust. He had trust in us, which you don’t always get.

Emma Mackey to Play the White Witch in ‘Narnia’

  • Emma Mackey will be Jadis, ‘Narnia’s White Witch.
  • Greta Gerwig is directing the movie.
  • The movie has scored a rare theatrical release from Netflix for 2026.

Like the titular kingdom itself, details on the ‘Narnia’ movie planned by Greta Gerwig are slowly starting to drip out, as the information freeze begins to thaw.

“The beloved masterpiece comes to life.”

Recently, we learned that Meryl Streep is in talks to play heroic, and somewhat messianic lion character Aslan in the movie, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the forces of darkness have found their leading lady.

Rising star Emma Mackey, known for Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’ series has landed the role of Jadis, the White Witch, seeing off competition from the likes of ‘The Substance’s Margaret Qualley.

It’s the first properly confirmed –– if not officially announced yet –– piece of casting, but there have been plenty of rumors in the past; the likes of Natalie Portman, Daisy Ridley, Brie Larson, and Selena Gomez have all shown interest in Gerwig’s project, and the director talked to recent ‘Anora’ Oscar winner Mikey Madison about a role.

In case the various film and TV adaptations have passed you by (the TV series was largely on the BBC in the UK, but the movies were big fantasy productions by 20th Century Fox in an era when studios were looking to capitalize on the success of ‘The Lord of the Rings’), the ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ is a series of seven books by British author C.S. Lewis.

Illustrated by Pauline Baynes and originally published between 1950 and 1956, the series is set in the fictional realm of Narnia, a fantasy world of magic, mythical beasts, and talking animals.

It narrates the adventures of various children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the Narnian world. Except in ‘The Horse and His Boy,’ the protagonists are all children from the real world who are magically transported to Narnia, where they are sometimes called upon by Aslan to protect Narnia from evil. The books span the entire history of Narnia, from its creation in ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ to its eventual destruction in ‘The Last Battle.’

Possibly the most famous tome in the set (and the one more normally adapted) is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.’

As for Jadis, she’s a nasty sort known for freezing Narnia in an endless winter (where Christmas never comes –– boo! hiss! etc.), and turning her enemies into statues. She’s the main antagonist of both ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ and ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.’

What’s the story of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ movie?

Gerwig’s movie will adapt the sixth novel in the ‘Narnia’ series, the aforementioned ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ which chronologically takes place first in the series. The novel tells the origin of Narnia and is centered on youngsters Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, who discover the magical world through Digory’s uncle’s magic.

Daniel Craig, per Deadline, has been in talks to play Uncle Andrew, while Charli XCX had been linked to potentially playing Jadis –– the role that Mackey has now landed.

If Gerwig’s first ‘Narnia’ movie is a success, she may end up adapting the others.

The biggest development for the movie before casting started was that Gerwig had managed to swing an exclusive two-week Imax global run in 90 countries across 1,000 auditoriums in advance of the movie’s drop on Netflix.

That’s pretty much unheard of in terms of Netflix releases, which has been loathed to give even its biggest talents more than a cursory theatrical release, mostly preferring to drive subscribers to its servers. So it’s a big vote of confidence in the writer/director (but then, again, when you’ve made ‘Barbie,’ it buys you some clout.)

Where else have we seen Emma Mackey?

Mackey, as mentioned before, broke out big playing Maeve Wiley in ‘Sex Education,’ which was a big hit on Netflix and ran between 2019 and 2023.

Since then, she’s exploded into the movie sphere, with the likes of ‘Death on the Nile’ and Emily.

But perhaps most pertinent to this latest job is her role as one of the Barbies in Gerwig’s 2023 smash hit named for the doll.

Coming up, Mackey has indie dramas ‘Hot Milk’ and ‘Alpha’ and will also be seen in James L. Brooks’ new political comedy ‘Ella McCay,’ playing the title character.

She has also been working on J.J. Abrams’ mysterious new blockbuster project.

So, when will Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ movie be on screens?

Narnia will release in Imax on Thanksgiving Day 2026, so November 26th and debut on Netflix on Christmas Day 2026.

According to Deadline, production on the film will begin in January 2026 in Sydney, Australia, with director Aaron Schneider also returning alongside Hanks. Although no other cast members have been announced yet, a number of actors from the original movie’s ensemble are also expected to return, including Stephen Graham (‘Adolescence’) and Elisabeth Shue.

Based on a 1955 novel called ‘The Good Shepherd’ by British writer C.S. Forester, the first ‘Greyhound’ followed Captain Ernest Krause, newly appointed commander of a destroyer called the U.S.S. Keeling and three other ships in its group, who must protect an Allied convoy as it makes its way through the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. The relatively inexperienced Krause and his crews are put to the test as they are attacked relentlessly by German U-boats.

Originally produced through Sony Pictures, ‘Greyhound’ was initially scheduled for release by the latter in June 2020 before COVID-19 shut down theaters worldwide. Sony instead sold the film to Apple TV+, which premiered it in July of that year on its streaming platform to critical and viewer acclaim. The film also picked up an Oscar nomination for best sound and was reportedly the most-watched offering on Apple TV+ at the time of its release.

A sequel went into development in 2022 through an exclusive deal between Apple and Hanks’ production company, Playtone Pictures, which also yielded the limited World War II series ‘Masters of the Air.’

Pre-production began on ‘Greyhound 2’ in 2024.

Hanks himself will next be seen in ‘The Phoenician Scheme,’ the new film from Wes Anderson that will premiere next month at the Cannes Film Festival before arriving in cinemas on May 30.
