  • Chris Hemsworth has boarded a new submarine thriller.
  • Patrick Vollrath will direct the movie, called ‘Subversion.’
  • It’s set to shoot this fall in Australia.

Director Patrick Vollrath is clearly a filmmaker who gets something out of movies set in enclosed spaces.

He made his directorial debut with 2019’s ‘7500,’ starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a pilot stuck in his cockpit while his plane is hijacked, and he’s now attached to a movie that will primarily be set inside a submarine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vollrath has no less a name than Chris Hemsworth aboard that thriller, titled ‘Subversion.’

Writer Andrew Ferguson, who has a number of scripts floating around the Blacklist of favored unproduced work, and has 2020 short film ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ on his resume, has cooked up the story, described as a “ ‘Die Hard’ on a submarine”-style thriller that centers on a once-promising Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like operation into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters.

Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing via his di Bonaventura Pictures company, and the movie is setting up to start the cameras rolling this fall in Australia.

Hemsworth was recently confirmed to be returning for the next big Marvel team-up movie, ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ his name announced first among a sprawling list of veteran and more recent characters from the giant cinematic universe.

Outside of swinging Thor’s hammer, Hemsworth has been seen in the likes of the ‘Extraction’ movies, ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ ‘Bad Times at the El Royale,’ 2016’s ‘Ghostbusters,’ and 2012’s ‘Snow White and the Huntsman.’

Coming up for the actor is Bart Layton’s new thriller ‘Crime 101,’ which sees a detective tracking a jewel thief adhering to the “Crime 101” rules –– a strict set of guidelines for the perfect heist.

Adapted from the Don Winslow novel, the cast for that one also includes Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry and Monica Barbaro.

He’s been at work making a third ‘Extraction’ outing, with Sam Hargrave back directing for Netflix and has been linked to a couple of projects that seem to be in development limbo; the ‘G.I. Joe’/‘Transformers’ crossover that Paramount is hoping will unite two of its biggest franchises and live-action Disney movie ‘Prince Charming,’ which is on hold since the box office failure of ‘Snow White.’

When will ‘Subversion’ sail into theaters?

‘Subversion’ is under the banner of Amazon MGM Studios, but the company has yet to confirm a release date.

‘Words of War’ Interview: Executive Producer Sean Penn

‘Words of War’ Interview: Executive Producer Sean Penn

Executive producer Sean Penn talks ‘Words of War’. Photo: Decal.

The new biographical drama ‘Words of War’, which tells the true story of late Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and was directed by James Strong (‘Torchwood’), opens in theaters on May 2nd.

Executive produced by two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn (‘Mystic River’ and ‘Milk’), the film stars Maxine Peake (‘The Theory of Everything’) as Anna Politkovskaya, Jason Isaacs (‘The White Lotus’) as Alexander Politkovsky, and Ciarán Hinds (‘Belfast’) as Dmitry Muratov.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with executive producer Sean Penn about his work on ‘Words of War’, how he got involved in the project, Anna Politkovskaya’s incredible story, why it was important to tell this story now, Maxine Peake and Jason Isaacs’ performances, director James Strong’s impressive work, Penn’s passion for freedom of the press, and what people can do to protect their own freedom of speech.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about how you got involved with this project and what exactly was your role as executive producer?

Sean Penn: That’s easy. So, Mark Maxey, one of the producers initially had been in touch with Congressman Eric Swalwell, who I have a continuous conversation with. The film was complete by the time I got involved, totally complete. They were, I think looking for champions to help present it in a sense. So, both Congressman Swalwell and I got involved on that basis. I was asked to see the film and when I saw it, I was just knocked out. Before we might talk about any of the timely prescient or political aspects of it, Maxine Peake, Jason Isaacs and Ciarán Hinds, the entire cast are just so fantastic from an actor’s point of view. It was exciting on its own terms. The story itself, I did have some memory of Anna Politkovskaya, the real person, beautifully played by Maxine Peake, and it is that thing that makes me most emotional in film and in life, which is just to recognize deep courage. It is a story of the kind of courage that were it not so rare, the fate of Anna would not have been what it was, because too many voices have been drowned out by that monster, and she was one of very few who had that kind of courage.

MF: Why do you think now was the right time to tell Anna Politkovskaya’s story on screen?

SP: Because I think that one group of one political perspective, and I’m obviously generalizing in this country, is by and large unwilling to soberly recognize how urgent the situation is. Even people who will recognize it and talk about it at a dinner table as if in a kind of performance of hyperbole. But it’s not hyperbole. We are a lot deeper than we let ourselves see most of the time, deeper into a perilous time for the United States of America, and for the world. A substantial part of that has nothing to do with leaders. It has to do with citizens. Citizens who are either exercising profound cowardice in numbing their own imagination and taking the imagination of, in effect cult leaders who might otherwise be working three blocks off the Vegas strip selling used cars. Or on the other hand, and therefore instead of exercising laziness, exercising a kind of fervent worship of nonsense, and the kind of nonsense that is most dangerous. It wouldn’t be the first time in my lifetime that that occurred. It occurred and is occurring in Russia today, and on that level. The point is for us and others not to ever let it get to that level. First thing we could do is maybe listen to our neighbor and find ways to talk that will allow our own voices to be heard. That’s something I need to improve. This movie does that. ‘Words of War’ does that. I really think that people coming in from every point of view will see largely the same thing as each other, no matter what their point of view is. Then we’ll bump both sides again, if not have a deeper understanding of it, have a refreshed one and a sober one.

MF: You are very passionate about fighting for freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Can you talk about how your own beliefs run parallel with the themes of this movie?

SP: Look, I would say yes, certainly I think that without free speech, which must include a lot of things we don’t like. I think reasonable people know what hate speech is, and we don’t need that. At least we don’t need that provided to us in commercial transfer. We don’t need young minds forming to be learning from morons, or from the Russians who take up a lot of that space, known and unknown to the readers. For me, it’s clear that without free speech and a freedom of the press, there is only fascism to be had. There is only committing oneself to a life without an imagination or a dream, which is what people suffer under authoritarianism.

MF: As an actor yourself, can you talk about Maxine Peake’s performance and the work that goes into playing a real person like Anna Politkovskaya?

SP: She captured courage. That must be something, you asked me what am I feeling in parallel with this thing? Well, what I would say is, I must assume that, in whatever way it manifests, as an actress, as a person with her friends, that the lady is a courageous lady. So, she understood the music of that courage, and it’s beautiful.

MF: The film also depicts how Politkovskaya’s work affected her personal life with her husband, played by Jason Isaacs. Can you talk about that and Jason Isaac’s performance?

SP: I’m very excited about, he’s been a very well-known and very well-respected actor for a long time, but with ‘The White Lotus’ alone, I’m just sort of tickled to see he’s getting his due, and that he did this film, and what he brought to this film. Yeah, he’s just a consummate actor, and great to watch. Ciarán Hinds is also great, and one of the great faces in film. It just resonates. He comes of times we miss. Very handsome guy, but not pretty. You know, a face that’s lived a lot of life, and you sense that part of it was with a sword.

MF: You are also a very accomplished director, so from that point of view, what is your opinion of director James Strong’s work on this film?

SP: I mean he did the thing that should be our aspiration every time we make a movie, he made me forgot I was watching a movie. I just was in it. I watch movies like a typical audience member. I don’t know if they’d even told me what it was about, because I was familiar with it to a degree with Anna. I had some memories of that case. It’s come up in conversations through the years, and then of course what happened in Moscow at the theater. He got behind the curtain on that in a beautiful way. But he’s a great storyteller and that’s directing.

Maxine Peake in 'Words of War'. Photo: Decal.

Maxine Peake in ‘Words of War’. Photo: Decal.

MF: Finally, what would you say to audience members that leave the movie wanting to help protect freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and what conversations do you hope this film sparks?

SP: Well, right off the top of my head, and this is just this one tiny thing among so many options, but there are organizations like IWPR, the Institute for War and Peace. If you’ve got $6 every six months, that’s meaningful. More is more meaningful. So, that’s the easy one, things like that. To do research and find which NGOs that support journalists, and there are many of them, that’s a go-to. I think also when I use this expression, which is not mine, borrowed, that “What sits on our neck is not here just for decoration,” I am very aware that that’s particularly true in my case. At least, that it’s not there for decoration. But it is there for something, and we should use it. So, I think that doing some research and finding out in which way, from financial, to whatever kind of direct involvement, people can support legitimate journalism and legitimate journalists.

“In a world silenced by fear, her truth was unstoppable.”

‘She Gets It From Me’ is based on a true story, and follows Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother, Charlotte (Tomei). Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect.

According to the official synopsis: “YouTube is packed with tearful family reunions, but nobody films the messy aftermath.”

3311 Productions (which previously backed the likes of ‘The Assistant,’ and ‘Brigsby Bear’) produces in partnership with Anna Werner for Seven Elephants ( who worked with Heinz on ‘And Tomorrow the Entire World,’) and Jay Reiss (writer of stage play ‘The Twenty Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,’) who also crafted the script.

Here’s what Heinz told Variety about the screenplay:

“The emotional truth of the movie, reflecting parts of all our lives, is truly funny, immersive cinema. Jay’s screenplay captures family dynamics at their most authentic: absurd yet profound, messy yet meaningful. The collision of two worlds creates comedy that cuts deep because it’s so honest.”

“Rachel always brings a brilliant depth and humanity to her roles, and we are so excited for her to continue to showcase her versatility and humor as an actress.”

More recently, she played Aunt May to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the latest trilogy of ‘Spider-Man’ movies and in 2024 alone, she appeared in three movie, ‘Upgraded,’ ‘High Tide’ and ‘Brothers.’

Upcoming for the actor are the likes of ‘F*ck Valentine’s Day’ and ‘You’re Dating a Narcissist.’ She’s also attached to action thriller ‘The Mongoose.’

Here’s what Embankment boss Hugo Grumbar said about Tomei’s casting:

“What could be more fun than finding out your birth mother is the wonderful Marisa Tomei!”

‘Broke’ Interview: Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid

‘Broke’ Interview: Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid

Available on digital beginning May 6th is the new Western sports drama ‘Broke’, which was written and directed by Carlyle Eubanks (‘The Signal’), and stars Wyatt Russell (‘Thunderbolts*’), Dennis Quaid (‘The Substance’), Mary McDonnell (‘Dances with Wolves’), and Tom Skerritt (‘Top Gun’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid about their work on ‘Broke’, if as a former professional hockey player Russell could relate to what his character is going through, why Quaid’s character is so hard on his son, working with actress Mary McDonnell, training for the horse-riding scenes, and how they shot the snowstorm sequence.

Moviefone: To begin with, Wyatt, as a former professional hockey player, could you relate to what your character is going through and his passion for his sport?

Wyatt Russell: That was one of the original draws for me, to be honest, the authenticity of what this world brought. I don’t like doing any sports movies. I don’t like watching any sports movies, to be honest, that feel inauthentic. This felt very authentic. I asked the director, “Do you know about this world?” He was like, “Yeah, because this is what I do when I’m not writing or directing movies.” I felt like I was in good hands, and I just knew that so much of what True goes through in the story is what I went through in hockey. I had concussions. Doctors tell you not to play. You feel like you get better, you go back, you have other issues, and you just won’t let them take you off the ice. In this instance, you can’t rip me off the horse, and you just got to keep getting back on. I went through it. I had to finally have someone tell me, “You can’t play anymore,” for me to stop playing and enter a life of the arts. It was just so different from what I was doing. I know it sounds crazy, and people are like, “Well, I don’t understand.” You didn’t do it. I was there doing it. When you must change gears like that, it’s daunting. It’s a whole new life. It’s a whole new you. You must change your identity, and so a lot of that was played into the film.

MF: Dennis, can you talk about your character’s relationship with his son, the tough love that he gives him, and working on that dynamic with Wyatt?

Dennis Quaid: Carlyle, who wrote the script and directed it, just from the first page, it is descriptions, which I say I’d never read except here. He’s so authentic, just the way he describes shooing a horse and what goes through there. Does this guy really know these people? He knew this life, and this world. These are men that don’t even know their own feelings. Forget about expressing them, which is gargantuan. The littlest breakthrough is a big one in a sense. He’s a guy out there trying to make it and trying to pass something important onto his sons, based upon the way he grew up, which is all we ever know. I think a lot of people can relate with that. I had Wyatt to do this with, which we had a good relationship to begin with. He knows what he is doing, and he’s very authentic. So, I wanted to be a part of it.

MF: Wyatt, what kind of training did you do to prepare for the bronco-riding scenes?

WR: I’ve done a lot of movies where I had to have horse training. I always would talk to the horse guys and be like, “Can I come out again?” Because it’s fun to learn. They’re always amazing people too. We had the eight-time national cutting champion, and I was like, “Can you teach me how to do stuff?” They’re free lessons. This was something I got to be able to go do and do a little bit of what I think is exciting to do on horseback. With Carlyle, we worked on roping skills, which was a big one because that wasn’t something that I was comfortable doing. I hadn’t done any of that. There was a lot of little things that we worked on, just the little details, so it didn’t look like I didn’t know what I was doing, or I hadn’t done that before. But you can tell when someone gets up on a horse immediately whether they’re a rider. I like being able to be authentic in things, and it was what I felt I could bring to this because I did have some ability.

MF: Dennis, had you ever worked with actress Mary McDonnell before and what was it like working with her on this project?

DQ: No, that was really a first. Gosh, she’s good. She made it seem so real to me as well, those people who live out there and what their life is like and what they endure. It really felt like a marriage, with a history to it.

Dennis Quaid in 'Broke'. Photo: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Dennis Quaid in ‘Broke’. Photo: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

MF: Finally, Wyatt, can you talk about shooting the snowstorm scenes, and were you as cold and miserable as it seemed like you were while you were shooting them?

WR: We made this movie for very little money, and we had to have a snowstorm. We shot it in two seasons, obviously, but we had to have a snowstorm. It had to happen. It wasn’t happening. But suddenly, boom, we get a cold snap. It was a negative 35 degrees in Wisdom, Montana. There’s no service up there. We had a skeleton crew wherever we were. There were two days, one where I had to go in the river, which is gnarly. The other one was where I had to bury myself in snow and pop up out of it. I had to be under there for a few minutes, until they set the camera up, and then I hear, “Okay, action.” Then I pop up, and I’ve got snow everywhere. I had a little snorkel. We didn’t have anything. My trailer was a rental car. We didn’t have any money. I was producing the movie. I was like, “Hey, get used to being uncomfortable”. I’m in a jean jacket and jeans, and let’s go. I’d come home, and I’d take a cold shower. I learned this. I would come home, and I would take a cold shower every night, because getting comfortable made it way worse. So, for that two-and-a-half weeks, I tried to stay as uncomfortable as possible because the more comfortable I got with being uncomfortable, the easier it became. Not so horrible. The weather was too gnarly to get warm and cozy.

“Stay in the saddle.”
