“Find that bat and that cat…” Warner Bros Animation has revealed the official trailer for Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, a brand new animation creation from the studio. The Caped Crusader returns! But now he’s in another time & place. The actual Spanish title is Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios. A young Aztec boy experiences tragedy when his father is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger. From Warner Bros. Animation, Ánima and Chatrone, and based on characters from DC, the all-new animated film places the iconic DC Super Hero against the backdrop of the captivating history of Mexico & immerses fans around the world in the exciting culture of Mesoamerica. The Spanish audio version of the film features Mexican voice actors Horacio García Rojas, Omar Chaparro, and Álvaro Morte. The English voice cast features Jay Hernandez and Raymond Cruz. Both the Spanish & English versions will be available to watch on VOD or BR when it drops in September. Similar to that other Batman-in-Japan movie Batman Ninja a few years ago. They even got an Aztec Catwoman, Two-Face, Joker, & Poison Ivy up in here. Looks like geeky DC fun.
Here’s the official trailer for Juan Jose Meza-Leon’s Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, from YouTube:

Colman & Cumberbatch Talk Divorce in ‘The Roses’ Story Featurette
by Alex Billington
July 24, 2025
Source: YouTube

“The Roses is a cautionary tale about romance.” Searchlight Pictures has debuted a new promo featurette for The Roses, an upcoming comedy from filmmaker Jay Roach (known for Meet the Parents & Fockers, the Austin Powers movies, Dinner for Schmucks, The Campaign). “All’s fair when love is war.” Life seems easy for this couple, however that’s all about to change. A tinderbox of competition and resentments hidden underneath the façade of a picture-perfect couple is ignited when the husband’s professional dreams come crashing down and his (ex-)wife’s career as a chef takes off. An updated, modern take on the book “The War of the Roses” written by Warren Adler, which was already made before into 1989 comedy of the same name. The first trailer arrived a few months ago already – it’s still set to open in September this fall. The Roses cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, with Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon. This is an amusing promo showing how much fun everyone had on set bringing the relationship chaos in the movie.
Here’s the story featurette (+ poster) for Jay Roach’s new comedy The Roses, from Searchlight’s YouTube:

Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor in ‘The History of Sound’ Official Trailer
by Alex Billington
July 24, 2025
Source: YouTube

“There was a moment when I realized that I had probably never been as happy as I was when collecting songs..” Mubi has revealed the first official trailer for a heartrending, romantic film titled The History of Sound, made by acclaimed South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus. This premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival a few months ago to mixed reviews – some raves, but plenty of negative reviews as well. Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor play star-crossed lovers Lionel and David in the film – a sweeping, moving and tender romance from Oliver Hermanus. Two young men during World War I set out to record the lives, voices and music of their American countrymen. They’re both in love with folk music and walk through the forests of Maine to find and record these songs forever. But little do they know this will change the course of both of their lives. The History of Sound stars Mescal and O’Connor, with Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, Hadley Robinson, Raphael Sbarge, and Chris Cooper as older Lionel. I’m a big fan of both of these actors, they’re quite talented, but this isn’t their best film. It has a few lovely moments but it’s mostly a dud.
Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Oliver Hermanus’ film The History of Sound, from YouTube:

In 1917, Lionel — a young, talented music student — meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading him on an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the folk music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness. The History of Sound is directed by acclaimed South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus, director of the films Shirley Adams, Beauty, The Endless River, Moffie, and Living previously, plus eps of the series “Mary & George” most recently. The screenplay is written by Ben Shattuck. Produced by Lisa Ciuffetti, Oliver Hermanus, Andrew Kortschak, Sara Murphy, Thérèsa Ryan, and Zhang Xin. This first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Mubi will debut Hermanus’ The History of Sound film in select US theaters starting September 12th, 2025 coming soon. Gorgeous Teaser Trailer for ‘Train Dreams’ Film Starring Joel Edgerton
by Alex Billington
July 24, 2025
Source: YouTube

“Every thread we pull, we know not how it affects the design of things.” Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for one of the best films of 2025 titled Train Dreams, made by filmmaker Clint Bentley (writer / producer on Sing Sing, director of Jockey before this). Train Dreams premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews from many critics (here’s mine). All this positivity convinced Netflix to give it a theatrical release – playing in theaters exclusively in November for two weeks before it arrives for streaming. The breathtakingly beautiful film is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century. It follows him throughout a great deal of his life, through trials and tribulations, as he watches the world change right before his eyes. It’s an incredible film. With a score composed by Bryce Dessner. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as Robert, Felicity Jones, Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, with Kerry Condon and William H. Macy. Narrated by Will Patton. This is a gorgeous teaser that features some of the best shots in the film – I really, really love it. Don’t miss this film.
Here’s the teaser trailer (+ poster) for Clint Bentley’s film Train Dreams, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

“A staggering work of art.” Based on Denis Johnson’s beloved novella, set during the early 20th Century, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier (starring Joel Edgerton), a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century. Train Dreams is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Clint Bentley, director of the film Jockey previously, plus a few shorts, and a produce / writer on the Oscar-nominated film Sing Sing. The screenplay is written by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar (director of Sing Sing), based on the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson. It’s produced by Marissa McMahon, Teddy Schwarzman, William Janowitz, Ashley Schlaifer, Michael Heimler. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Netflix will debut Bentley’s Train Dreams in select theaters first on November 7th, 2025, then streaming on Netflix worldwide starting November 21st. How does that look? Want to watch?

First Look Teaser for ‘The Last Frontier’ Inmates Plane Crash Thriller
by Alex Billington
July 24, 2025
Source: YouTube

“The only thing scarier than a plane crash is a plane crash full of violent inmates.” Uh oh. Doesn’t sound good. Apple TV has revealed a first look announcement teaser confirming the release of the series titled The Last Frontier. It’s set to arrive for streaming on Apple TV+ starting on October 10th this fall. Of course this just reminds me of Con-Air. Though it looks more like Con-Air meets The Grey (the 2011 Liam Neeson survival thriller). The series follows Frank Remnick, a U.S. Marshal in charge of the quiet and weathered barrens of Alaska, as he needs to deal with a prison transport plane crash full of violent inmates inside his jurisdiction. Jason Clarke stars as Remnick, along with Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, & Alfre Woodard. I also recognize Clifton Collins Jr. on the plane. With episodes directed by filmmakers John Curran (director of The Painted Veil, Stone, Tracks, Chappaquiddick, Mercy Road) and Sam Hargrave (director of Extraction 1 & 2). A very quick early teaser without much footage yet – but something to keep an eye out for anyway this fall. This might be really good.
Here’s the first look announcement promo for Apple TV+’s new series The Last Frontier, from YouTube:

The series follows Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke), the lone U.S. marshal in charge of all the quiet, rugged barrens of Alaska. Remnick’s jurisdiction is turned upside-down when a prison transport plane crashes in the remote wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates. Tasked with protecting the town he’s vowed to keep safe, he begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching and devastating implications. The Last Frontier is a series created & written by the writers Jon Bokenkamp (Taking Lives, The Call,, The Blacklist, The Blacklist: Redemption) and Richard D’Ovidio. With additional writing by Melissa Glenn. And episodes directed by John Curran, Dennie Gordon, Jessica Lowrey, Sam Hargrave. Made by Pickpocket Entertainment & Apple Studios. Exec produced by Bokenkamp & D’Ovidio, Jason Clarke, Laura Benson, Glenn Kessler, Albert Kim, and Sam Hargrave. Apple will debut The Last Frontier series streaming on Apple TV+ starting October 10th, 2025 this fall. Who’s intrigued?
