probably don’t think about “Gnomeo & Juliet” very much these days. But, back in 2011, this strange little Shakespeare adaptation managed to do some tidy little business for itself.
“Gnomeo & Juliet” is one of the weirder adaptations of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet,” starring James McAvoy and Emily Blunt in the title roles. Instead of the Montagues and Capulets, “Gnomeo & Juliet” focuses on the Bluebury and Redbrick families. Just like in the Shakespeare original, a young man (gnome, in this case?) and woman (gnoman?) fall into a starcrossed entanglement. However, “Gnomeo & Juliet” swerves that dour ending for the couple through some clever machinations that subvert the Shakespearian tragedy audiences might be expecting.
Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan aren’t part of the main cast of characters, but the metal musician ends up playing a pretty sizable role as a secondary antagonist for “Gnomeo & Juliet,” with his villainous character Fawn backing up Jason Statham’s Tybalt. Hogan, meanwhile, plays the voice behind a Terrafirminator lawnmower TV advert that ends up providing tension near the climax of the movie.
Throughout “Gnomeo & Juliet”, Ozzy Osbourne’s Fawn whispers encouragement behind Tybalt, who consistently feuds with Gnomeo’s friends. The fact that Osbourne’s character is a little deer statue is played for laughs, and this kind of gag was common during The Prince of Darkness’s later period. As a frontman for Black Sabbath, Osbourne was nothing short of a metal god, but in the ’00s and beyond, Ozzy leaned into his comedic side a lot as audiences got a taste of the man beyond biting bats. That sharp wit really never left, and you get some menace with a side of laughs with Fawn in “Gnomeo & Juliet.”
For Hulk Hogan, his role as the voice of the Terrafirminator fits right into the larger “Hulkamaniac” brand during the early part of the ’10s. Yes, the Hulkster was a World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Famer, and one of the instantly recognizable faces in pop culture, but he was also an early example of “person as brand” too. For a man that sold Hulkamania Workout Sets and a Hulk Hogan Thunder Mixer, hearing his voice associated with a dangerous lawnmower that threatens one of our main characters is pretty funny casting by the creative team. This is a guy who would have his voice attached to pretty much anything, and it showed throughout his life, so the choice here tracks perfectly well.
“Gnomeo & Juliet” might have an eccentric mix of stars, but all the voices involved seem to buy into what’s going on. That’s hard to find sometimes in the world of mainstream animated family movies. The casting of Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan in “Gnomeo & Juliet” tells you a lot about where they were at this point in both of their careers. Who would have thought Shakespeare, of all things, could teach us that?
The superhero genre continues to be popular, with a number of shared universes competing at the box office. Co-CEO James Gunn is crafting a new DC Universe, with the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters. There are countless questions about upcoming DC movies, including what characters are canon. So does Aquaman exist in this new shared universe? Gunn offered his perspective.
The Guardians filmmaker is currently gearing up for Peacemaker Season 2, which will help expand the DCU. The first movie Superman featured a number of other heroes, but it’s unclear what the plan is for Aquaman. While on the Peacemaker podcast, Gunn was asked about about the character formerly played by Jason Momoa, and he said:
Is Aquaman canon? We don’t know. I don’t think Aquaman is canon.
James Gunn is at the head of the DC Universe, so you’d think he’d have all the answers regarding its future. While he doesn’t think that Aquaman exists in the DCU, it sounds like it’s not totally decided just yet. We’ll just have to be patient and see what happens down the line.
Aquaman cameod in Peacemaker Season 1. But that was technically a different shared universe, so Gunn is able to do whatever he wants with the aquatic hero. Although I don’t expect the Game of Thrones alum to play that role again.
Later in that same podcast, Gunn clarified what he meant by saying that Aquaman doesn’t exist in the DCU. As he put it:
It’s unlikely that Aquaman is a famous hero in the DCU as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 is happening.
It looks like Arthur Curry might exist, but he’s not a famous superhero going by the name Aquaman in the DC Universe. Only time will tell when we see that hero again, and what Gunn and company might have planned for him.
As previously mentioned, fans are expecting another actor to play this hero if/when he returns to the screen. Jason Momoa is going to play the cosmic antihero Lobo in the DCU, so his time as Aquaman has seemingly come to an end. And it would definitely be trippy to see Momoa interacting with the new Aquaman in a future DC project. Hey, a guy can dream!
There are countless questions about what’s going on at DC, as James Gunn and company craft an interconnected franchise that spans TV shows, movies, and video games. Superman killed at the box office, so things are definitely starting off with a bang.
Superman is in theaters now and Peacemaker will begin Season 2 on August 21st as part of the TV premiere list. Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl are confirmed to appear, so we’ll have to see what other crossovers occur throughout its second batch of episodes.
The 2025 movie schedule will soon see the grand return of ‘00s teen movie queen Lindsay Lohan to the big screen. Even better, the upcoming Freakier Friday sees her return to her role as Anna Coleman for more body-swapping hilarity alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, for the first time in over two decades. The early August release is fast approaching, and I’m so here for how the Our Little Secret actress has embraced Barbiecore for her premiere looks.
While we are all well aware that the Barbenheimer joy of 2023 is far behind us, I don’t think there’s a fashion lover in the world who’d say that there is ever a wrong time to rock pink. Especially when you consider that the long-awaited Freakier Friday will feature an appearance from Lindsay Lohan’s Anna literally rocking out with her band, Pink Slip, again.
The star of some of the best 2000s movies has been busy promoting her new comedy (which, along with Jamie Lee Curtis, also stars Sophia Hammons, Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto and returning faves like Chad Michael Murray), and is going hard on Barbiecore for “purple” carpet appearances. Just look:
Barbie in this ‘fit. Harper’s Bazaar has the details on this pinktastic look, and Lohan took the lead in a floor-length Miu Miu dress that’s dotted with silver rhinestones. If you happen to be wondering why she’s carrying a microphone, well that’s not only clearly a nod to Anna’s band, but actually the Mean Girls star’s purse, which is a $4,995 Judith Leiber design.
Lohanaissance now running at an A+, Parent Trap level it makes sense that the star would choose a happy color like pink to help promote her new film. The number of celebs who’ve worn the cheery Barbiecore look (over the past couple of years in particular) is nearly innumerable, with everyone from Barbie stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie (who turned up in classic Barbie doll ‘fits many times) took on method dressing, with others like Florence Pugh and Sabrina Carpenter taking the bright hue into 2024 and 2025. Trust me, this is way better than the low-rise jeans of the early aughts that Lohan had to deal with!
If you think bright was only on the look list for 2-year-old Luai’s mom, however, think again. Lohan rocked pink again while at the movie’s Mexico City premiere with Curtis, who also lit up the room in a lovely citrusy shade:
Lohan chose a fuchsia shade this time around and is simply gorgeous in this ruched and ruffled Balmain gown, while Curtis sported an orange Carolina Herrera sweater and skirt, which was covered with ombre sequins that added a teensy bit of Barbiecore to her ‘fit as well. I have to say, there are so many shades of pink that literally no one looks bad in it, and I kinda hope to see Lohan continue this dressing method for a long time to come!
In Logan Lerman‘s new movie, Oh, Hi!, he plays a bit of an asshole. The technical, generationally specific term might be “soft boy” — a young, entitled New Yorker who wants all the perks of a relationship (companionship, sex, a reliable plus-one) without the commitment. The dark comedy hinges on the extremely poorly timed moment his character Isaac reveals to his not-quite-girlfriend Iris (played by Molly Gordon) that they’re not a couple — at least not in his mind.
Lerman plays the part so smoothly and convincingly, it’s easy to assume he’s drawing on personal experience. In fact, he is. Just not in the way you’d think.
“I’m an Iris,” he says over breakfast at his local diner in L.A.’s Franklin Village. “In my dating life, I’ve been with people and thought, ‘This is so great!’ But then they tell me it’s actually not working, and the whole thing implodes after a few months. You’re left thinking, ‘Wait, I thought we had something good?’ “

This admission isn’t what people would expect from someone who’s been in the spotlight since he first broke out in 2010’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians and was anointed by fans as “White Boy of the Year” and “The Internet’s Boyfriend.” And yet, Lerman, now 33, manages to keep a relatively low profile. He doesn’t do much press, and despite the fan pages tracking his every haircut, he has managed to stay just out of reach.
Raised in West L.A., he was a possible heir to a podiatry dynasty — his great-grandfather founded an orthotics company, and much of his family still works in the business. Acting started as a distraction during his parents’ divorce. “They were like, ‘He needs something to do,’ ” he says, “and I’d always loved performing.” That pastime turned serious when he was cast as Christian Bale’s son in 3:10 to Yuma at 14. “Being part of that movie scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had,” he recalls. “That feeling — plus wanting to get the fuck away from home — made me realize I wanted to just do this job all the time.”
Although Percy Jackson and The Perks of Being a Wallflower earned him a devoted teen fan base, he managed to sidestep the child-actor trap, pivoting to adult roles in Fury, Bullet Train and Hunters. “Still,” he says, “you hit a point in your mid-20s where you think, ‘I don’t ever want to be in a high school [movie] again. I don’t ever want to wear a backpack.’ “
Enter Oh, Hi!, co-written by Gordon and director Sophie Brooks. The script had been circulating for years but never landed in Lerman’s hands — until his team happened to start repping Gordon. That’s when a copy finally appeared in his inbox.
“As soon as I read it, I said yes,” he recalls — never mind the role’s rather specific physical requirements.
Isaac drops the bomb that he and Iris aren’t a couple while he’s handcuffed to her bed, post-sex — and she refuses to let him go. That’s not just a scene, it’s pretty much the entire movie. Lerman estimates he spent more than 100 hours lying prone on the set. “At first I wondered how we’d make it work, energy-wise,” he says, “but it came down to the bed frame and how much movement it allowed. Once we figured that out, I’d just show up to work and hop into bed.” Physically, it was easy. “The hardest part was knowing I had to be naked every day — and look the same every day. That took more effort, especially toward the end of the shoot.”

The film also gave Lerman a chance to flex comedic muscles rarely seen in his more serious roles. He’ll continue that streak with a guest turn in the next season of Only Murders in the Building. He wrapped filming a few weeks before this breakfast and still sounds a little surprised by how much fun he had during his downtime with Steve Martin and Martin Short. “It’s scary to meet someone whose work you love that much,” he says. “They can ruin their whole filmography for you if they’re an asshole. That’s happened to me — those people shall remain nameless.”
Despite this recent turn toward comedy, Lerman insists he doesn’t map out his career. OMITB showrunner John Hoffman offered him the role just a week before shooting began. “I don’t really plan,” Lerman says. “I like the excitement of not knowing what’s next.”
Meanwhile, he seems to have ironed out the kinks in his own love life. Just before the pandemic, he met ceramic artist Ana Corrigan — and unlike Isaac and Iris, she’s been sticking around of her own free will. In fact, they got engaged two years ago. “I’m approaching the time in my life where I want kids,” Lerman says. “And I’m thinking a lot about how to balance that with my work.” He shrugs. “But the irony is, now that I’m in a great relationship, it’s easier than ever to focus on my career — because everything else finally feels solid.”

“Oh, I will keep fighting. You can keep lining up your men. Eventually, you’ll just run out of warriors…” Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for Prisoner of War, yet another junk action movie from this group of stuntman / filmmakers. Also featuring a generic title, even though it is technically about a POW. “Behind enemy lines, survival is the only mission.” British RAF Wing Commander James Wright is captured by the Japanese during WWII and forced to fight in brutal hand to hand combat. The Japanese soldiers get more than they bargained for when Wright’s years of martial arts training in Hong Kong prove him to be a formidable opponent. Of course. Scott Adkins stars in Prisoner of War, directed by his fellow action actor Louis Mandylor, with Peter Shinkoda, Michael Copon, Gabbi Garcia, & Cowboy Cerrone. Well Go is dropping this on VOD in September if anyone wants to give it a go. This doesn’t seem as bad as most of these action movies these days – because it’s just focused on him fighting all these WWII Japanese soldiers.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Louis Mandylor’s action movie Prisoner of War, from YouTube:
Starring martial arts icon Scott Adkins as British SAS officer James Wright, the action thriller Prisoner of War tells the story of a soldier captured by the Japanese during World War II, and held in a Philippines POW camp. Before the entire colony embarks upon the Bataan Death March, Wright & his fellow prisoners are forced to compete in brutal death matches for the entertainment of their captors. Scott Adkins puts in a career best performance as the man who may be able to save them all… Prisoner of War is directed by Australian actor / filmmaker Louis Mandylor, director of the films Jimmy Bones, In the Eyes of a Killer, The Blackout, Blindsided, Christmas Down Under, 3 Days in Malay, and Operation Blood Hunt previously. The screenplay is written by Marc Clebanoff, from a story by Scott Adkins. Produced by Marc Clebanoff, Michael Copon, Louis Mandylor, Brandon Menchen. Well Go USA will debut Mandylor’s Prisoner of War movie in select US theaters + on VOD starting September 19th, 2025 this fall. Anyone want to watch it?
